Difficult Access

Although observation and evaluation of
exterior building walls can often be performed using swing stages,
scaffolding, or special lifts, in some instances these methods are
not practical or cost-effective. In these cases, BC&E uses
rappelling and special climbing techniques to perform up-close
examination of building facades and other structures. BC&E personnel
are trained in such roped-access techniques, which typically employ
a rope descent system in conjunction with a seating platform,
special ropes and decent devices, and other safety features. During
such examinations, in certain conditions, small fragments from the
structure may be removed where they pose a safety hazard to areas
below.
